Surgical Services Coordinator

OVERVIEW

The Surgical Services Coordinator is responsible for providing technical assistance throughout the surgical organ recovery process along with the preservation and distribution of organs for transplantation.  This position is also responsible for many routine activities conducted in the office and donor hospitals to complete the organ recovery process and documentation.

Job Requirements:

  • Current licensure with the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) as a certified surgical technologist (CST) or a combination of education and equivalent experience may be considered.    

  • Minimum 2 years work experience in surgical technology utilizing sterile technique in a healthcare environment preferred.

  • Minimum 2 years of sterile processing experience preferred.

  • Experience in abdominal and/or cardiothoracic surgery is preferred.

  • Must have basic knowledge of dosages and calculations.

  • Must maintain a BLS certification.

  • Excellent communication skills required. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel and to represent the organization publicly.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required. Must have the ability to interact with all levels of healthcare personnel and the public.

  • Ability to cope with high levels of stress and able to handle a heavy workload.

  • Ability to travel in light and commercial aircraft or drive his/her personal auto to meet all job duties and responsibilities. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs pulling case carts for recovery, preparation of the mayo stand and the back table, counting of instruments and surgical items, passing of surgical instruments, and disinfecting/cleaning of the operating room.

  • Coordinates long-distance recovery logistics for import organ offers.

  • Prepares operating room and orients OR staff to the surgical phase of recovery.

  • Preserves organs in compliance with STA and OPTN policy.

  • Packages, labels, and transports organs according to STA and OPTN policy.

  • Cleans and organizes workrooms and equipment per STA policy.

  • Documents surgical phase of the recovery in the electronic donor record in compliance with STA policy and procedures.

  • Prepares recovery equipment and supplies for use in the recovery process as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.
