Epidemiologist

The Epidemiologist plays a crucial role in optimizing operational performance and identifying opportunities for improvement. The Epidemiologist works in collaboration with various departments to analyze available data, identify factors that influence performance, and provide recommendations for changes and associated key performance indicators (KPIs) to optimize our organization's overall performance in order to save and enhance more lives. The incumbent leads efforts to organize and conduct research on activities both within Southwest Transplant Alliance and the broader transplant community for the purpose of providing evidence to support best practices across all functional units.  

 

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: 

 

  • Proposes and designs research projects using both laboratory research and environmental and community studies 

  • Utilize epidemiological and statistical methods and software to analyze available data, identify factors influencing organ donation rates, and identify key performance indicators (KPIs) 

  • Collaborate with internal teams to assess current practices, identify areas for improvement, and develop strategies to optimize organ procurement operations 

  • Conduct thorough evaluations of organ and tissue procurement processes, identifying opportunities to increase efficiency and improve performance 

  • Perform data cleaning, management, and quality assurance procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of datasets, as needed 

  • Develop and implement statistical models and algorithms to predict organ donation outcomes and optimize resource allocation 

  • Analyzes results and supervises the preparation of research project reports 

  • Identifies risk from research 

  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews and stay updated on the latest advancements and best practices in organ procurement and transplantation 

  • Present findings and recommendations to organizational leadership, stakeholders, and external partners in a clear and concise manner 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional design and evaluate interventions aimed at increasing organ donation rates and improving processes 

  • Assist in the development and implementation of data collection tolls, surveys, and other instruments to capture relevant information 

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to design and conduct research studies to address knowledge gaps and identify best practices, adding to the scientific knowledge base in the field 

  • Gives educational talks to community groups 

  • Performs other duties as assigned  

 

Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements: 

 

  • Master’s degree (MPH) in Epidemiology preferred, or Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, equivalent experience, or a combination of education and experience. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience yearly. 

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role required for applicants  

  • Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., R, SAS, STATA) and statistical programming languages 

  • Current Driver’s license required 

Qualifications and Skills: 

  • Strong knowledge of epidemiological principles, study design, and statistical analysis methods 

  • Knowledge of organ transplantation processes, regulations, and data sources is high desirable 

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to work with large datasets and conducting advanced statistical analyses 

  • Knowledge of the design and administration of epidemiological research 

  • Analytical, organizational, and leadership skills for staff supervision and direction 

  • Detailed-oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills 

  • Ability to translate complex epidemiological concepts into actionable recommendations 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex information and findings to diverse audiences 

  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary team 

  • High level of professionalism, ethics, and respect of data privacy and confidentiality 

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required 

  • Ability to cope with high levels of stress and able to handle a heavy workload 

  • Ability to travel in light and commercial aircraft or drive his/her personal auto in order to meet all job duties and responsibilities
