Laboratory Technologist III
GENERAL STATEMENT (Summary of Duties and Responsibilities)
The laboratory technologists are responsible to perform and analyze the results of complex scientific tests on blood and bodily fluids in a high complexity testing lab. The Laboratory Technologist is responsible to and works under the direction of the Laboratory Technical Supervisor/Manager and Director of Laboratory Services. The laboratory technologist is responsible for performing laboratory testing (serology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, point-of-care and molecular NAT testing on donor, proficiency, environmental, employee, and reference lab samples. The laboratory technologist is also responsible to cut frozen section biopsies and upload the biopsy slides for pathologist viewing. The laboratory technologists are responsible for collaborating with leadership on patient data, reporting and documentation of all Quality Control for instrumentation. Follows all operating procedures and performs all maintenance on equipment.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, and/or medical technology from an accredited institution.
A) Education - 60 semester hours including either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses (6 hours of chemistry; 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours in chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology, or any combination.
Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, equipment, and techniques of medical technology.
Knowledge of recent developments in the field of medical technology.
Ability to perform assigned tasks according to prescribed procedures and to make accurate observations and records of tests results.
Demonstrates analytical thinking.
Must have the ability to provide clear written and oral instruction related to complex processes, communicate effectively with all levels of personnel, and to represent the organization publicly.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required
Have 3 years of HLA experience or have 3 years of microbiology experience in addition to Tech III job description.
LAB TECHNOLOGIST I:
Essential Duties:
Follow prescribed procedures, perform any of the tests within any of the laboratory specialties including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, microbiology and donor screening for human cells and tissues. Calculating the results of the tests performed if necessary.
Recognize and correct basic analyzer malfunctions. Notify management personnel and vendors when appropriate.
Evaluating media, reagents, samples, and calibrators according to established criteria.
Appropriately cut and label different biopsies specimens. Stain, cover slip, and upload the biopsy slides for the pathologist to perform their review of the specimen.
Monitor the presence or absence of microorganisms in testing environment.
Transfer microbiology recovery cultures to broth and plate media and incubate with pre-determined reading intervals for identification of bacteria, yeast and/or mold using identified and approved methods.
Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
Document all corrective actions taken when the test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
Provide continuous feedback for equipment performance and workflow.
Utilize laboratory information systems or other methods to report patient results accurately and effectively.
Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of tests.
Perform validation procedures on new testing platforms.
Direct customer service involving client inquiries.
Create an inspiring team environment with open communications.
Be available for teammates to access by Phone.
Oversee the review process within the lab including test data and monthly logs/forms.
LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST, LEVEL II
Essential Job Functions:
Performs all essential job functions for Laboratory Technologist, Level I.
Understands and be able to execute laboratory equipment implementation per STA Policy.
Provides on the job training for Laboratory Technologists, Level I. Identifies training needs and provides appropriate coaching.
Writes laboratory procedures and forms conforming to standardized format.
Assists department leadership in overseeing inventory and ordering needs.
Demonstrates the ability for shift flexibility and rotating 24-hour call responsibilities with other team members.
LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST, LEVEL III
Essential Job Functions:
Performs all essential job functions for Laboratory Technologist, Level I and II.
Provides on the job training for Laboratory Technologists, Level I and II. Identify training needs and provide appropriate coaching.
Writes Validation Protocols conforming to standardized format.
Collects data/ objective evidence for Variance Investigations and implements CAPAs.
Assists manager in overseeing equipment maintenance.
Assists in Proficiency planning and preparing samples for internal monthly requirements.
Assists with handling desk audits.
Reviews test packet data for GDP before filing and notifies Lab Manager of any issues.
Leads weekly huddles.
