STA and Airspace Track Critical Shipments to Deliver Second Chances at Life
Innovation Spotlight
Overview:
Since 2018, Southwest Transplant Alliance has partnered with Airspace to coordinate the logistics of shipping life-saving organs for transplant in addition to other time-critical medical tests and cargo. With more than 6,000 successful shipments over the course of their partnership, STA and Airspace continue to expand the use of technology in safely transporting kidneys, pancreata and other important shipments.
Case for Support:
In a race against time, organ procurement organizations coordinate, recover and allocate life-saving organs on behalf of the heroic donors and courageous families who make these gifts possible. Lifesaving organs must travel to transplant centers often within a 500-mile radius. In the United States there are more than 100,000 individuals awaiting a lifesaving organ transplant.
From 2014 to 2019, nearly 170 organs across the country could not be transplanted due to transportation challenges. 370 were considered “near misses” with delays of 2 hours or more.
“Our lifesaving mission carries tremendous responsibility. Those on the transplant waiting list depend on us. We must leave nothing to chance,” said President and CEO of Southwest Transplant Alliance Patti Niles. “STA proudly works alongside the passionate and dedicated team at Airspace, whose advanced technology and 24/7 support ensures critical shipments arrive in time to make second chances at life possible.”
Turn to Tech
Since the company’s inception, Airspace has saved more than 100,000 lives by efficiently transporting life-critical deliveries. Airspace’s technology is automated through a centralized online platform to streamline pickup and delivery for medical facilities, labs and organ procurement organizations. Leveraging the most advanced technology, Airspace is able to cut down on delivery time, eliminate lost or unviable shipments, provide real-time transparency and save more lives in the process.
“The entire process of transporting time-sensitive shipments can be streamlined from pickup through delivery via automation,” said co-founder and CEO of Airspace Nick Bulcao. “Harnessing the power of technology to coordinate life-critical shipments improves speed, accuracy and transparency. We are proud to play a part in STA's lifesaving mission.”
