Surgical Services Supervisor

GENERAL STATEMENT (Summary of Duties and Responsibilities) The Supervisor of Surgical Services is responsible for the day-to-day activities related to staff and events which follow the surgical recovery and preservation of an organ donor. The incumbent will maintain expertise of all activities related to job functions required of a Surgical Services Coordinator. Duties also include input into the orientation of new surgical staff, as well as, any special projects which may be assigned.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Surgical Services or equivalent preferred.

  • Prior experience as a preceptor in a clinical setting.

  • Prior leadership experience in a clinical setting preferred.

  • Certified Transplant Preservationist, Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator, or eligible through the ABTC.

  • Expert knowledge of OPO standards & OPTN policy related to job function.

  • Must have the ability to provide clear written and oral instruction related to complex processes, communicate effectively with all levels of personnel, and to represent the organization publicly.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required.

  • Detail oriented, with ability to cope with high levels of stress and able to handle a heavy workload.

  • Must be able to simultaneously execute upon multiple complex processes, provide accurate documentation, and prioritize tasks to optimize workflow to ensure compliance with established policies and timelines.

  • Ability to travel in light and commercial aircraft or drive his/her personal auto in order to meet all job duties and responsibilities. Current Driver’s license required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs at a supervisory role to assigned team members, including: a. Root-cause analysis and corrective action plans related to department functions. b. Conduct employee appraisal, performance improvement plans, and corrective action plans under the leadership of the Director, Surgical and Perfusion Services. c. Approve employee timesheets, expense reports and PTO requests in accordance with STA guidelines and policy.

  • Assist People Services and Education Departments in recruiting, interviewing and training clinical staff. 3. Maintains skills of a Surgical Services Coordinator by performing on-site and in-office preservation as needed, according to donor activity.

  • Maintains some office hours in addition to call responsibilities.

  • Perform or oversee and provide clear direction to others related to all expected duties of an SSC, Senior SSC, Advanced Practice SSC.

  • Actively monitors case activity, providing input for optimal strategies.

  • Ensures accuracy and completeness of documentation for department related activity (e.g. BTM, kidney pumping, imports, etc.)

  • Provide support and motivation to surgical staff. a. Round on direct reports. b. Provide feedback to staff to allow for improvement within the department and overall professional growth. c. Make on site visits to ensure STA policy is performed

  • Ensures proper documentation of training.

  • Ensures adequate staffing.

  • Oversees communication related to the surgical recovery and preservation of organs. 12. Other duties as assigned.
