Our History

For more than 40 years, Southwest Transplant Alliance has helped save and improve lives by recovering donated organs and tissues for transplantation. Founded in 1974, STA is one of the largest federally designated, nonprofit organ procurement organizations (OPOs) in the country.

As the first independent OPO in the United States, STA was founded to facilitate kidney retrieval for Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Today, STA coordinates organ transplantation to patients in 10 transplant centers in our service area across Texas. Since our founding, we’ve recovered more than 35,000 organs and saved or enhanced the lives of more than 100,000 people.

More than 40 years of saving lives.
