1/29/09 Organs of 19-year-old killed in December collision save five lives

By Adriana M. Chávez / El Paso Times

EL PASO - The organs of Ivan Chavez, 19, who died last month from injuries he suffered during a head-on collision in West El Paso, have saved the lives of five people, said a spokeswoman with the Southwest Transplant Alliance.

His right kidney was donated to a 47-year-old man, while his left kidney went to a 16-year-old boy, both in Texas, alliance spokeswoman Pam Silvestri said. Chavez's liver went to another 47-year-old man, and his heart was given to a 46-year-old women, also both in Texas. Chavez's lungs were given to a 52-year-old man outside of Texas.

Chavez died Dec. 22, six days after he was injured in a collision in the 400 block of Shadow Mountain. Chavez was a passenger in a car driven by Alejandro Sierra Montoya, 26. Montoya was charged with intoxicated assault and accident involving injury or death.

Silvestri said Chavez's photo will be added Thursday to the Wall of Heroes at Thomason Hospital. The wall recognizes organ donors in the El Paso area.
