For more than 40 years, Southwest Transplant Alliance (STA) has been saving lives by recovering donated organs for those waiting for transplants. Founded in 1974, STA is among the largest of 58 federally designated, nonprofit organ procurement organizations in the United States.

STA was the first freestanding, independent organ procurement organization (OPO) in the United States. We were founded to facilitate kidney retrieval for Parkland Memorial Hospital. That first year, we recovered 13 organs from nine donors. Today, STA coordinates organ transplantations to patients in 11 transplant centers in our donor service area. Since STA was founded, we’ve recovered more than 20,000 organs and saved or enhanced the lives of nearly 100,000 people.
